Precious metal – white gold September 4, 2019 – Posted in: Advice – Tags: Jewelry, white gold
Jewelry made with white gold started to gain popularity in the last decade of the previous century. The main reason for this can be attributed to the fact, that white gold emphasizes the way diamonds look – their shine increases significantly. White gold is formed by mixing gold with silver, nickel or palladium. Such a ring consists of approximately 75% gold and 25% of other alloys mentioned previously. Just like with other types of gold, such alloys ensure hardness as gold itself is rather soft. Without adding other types of metal, jewelry would quickly lose its shape. Jewelry made with white gold can be worn daily and is scratch resistant.
As mentioned previously, white gold consists of pure gold and other metals. White color is achieved with a process called Rhodium plating. It’s applied to the surface and increases its shine, life span and makes it scratch resistant.
Throughout the years, Rhodium slowly wears off and it’s possible that your piece of jewelry starts showing yellow shades. This is completely normal and can be easily fixed. It’s recommended that you bring your jewelry to a goldsmith, who repeats the process of reapplying Rhodium. After a few moments, your favorite ring will be as shiny as it was on the first day.
At first glance, white gold looks a bit similar to silver. There are a few tricks we can use to distinguish between both metals. Silver is softer, can lose its shape and is cheaper. White gold does not lose its shine and does not have to be polished. But the most obvious difference is in the stamp, which is placed in the inner part of a ring. If you see the number 925, then this piece is made of silver. When it comes to white gold, the stamp should read 585 for 14 carat and 750 for 18 carat gold.
Even though white gold is scratch-resistant, such inconveniences can still happen. If your ring gets some dirt on it, just wash it and wipe the surface using a piece of soft fabric. Avoid aggressive detergents and soaps at all costs. Taking care of jewelry made with white gold is no different from other types of gold. The lifespan can be increased by removing your jewelry before taking a shower, applying makeup, perfumes and similar.
